You might remember my post last month where I talked about the Hunt for the Perfect Reuben Sandwich for my Grandfather… Well I am sad to report that shortly after that letter went out on April 17th he opted out and decided to go to heaven to join my grandmother. He went quick and quietly exactly as he wanted, while making his coffee in the kitchen As some of you know, he lived with us for the last 8 years in a small house we had built on our property and while we had our challenges it was such a joy to be able to spend so much time with him. The crazy part is that over the last couple weeks we have been going through his things and it is amazing how much of his life I didn’t really know about. My Uncle Steve and I sat down and went through boxes and boxes of memories and pictures that held 86 years of one man’s life. grandpa1My grandfather Eugene Arthur George Koelle born January 17, 1927 grew up in Chicago, Illinois and decided to leave the snow and cold and head out to California in his late teens. He was very proud of the fact that he was a MARINE and served our great country during the Korean war. He loved to talk about how they wouldn’t originally let him in due to his poor vision, but he finally memorized the Eye chart so he could pass. He loved to dance and always had a song to sing, luckily I was able to get a few of them on video. In fact his love of dancing is how he won over my grandmother J In fact, my uncle and I found stacks of cards, poems, notes and love letters between him and my grandmother that are so special and show their true love for each other. I feel so incredibly blessed to have had such a wonderful man and role model in my life and will miss him terribly. Sing me a song in Heaven Grandpa! Until we meet again…
